The State President's house and estate, Groote Schuur, is in Klipper Road. The Premier development is situated opposite Klipper Road on Main Road Rondebosch. Groote Schuur, Dutch for 'Big Barn', was originally built by the Dutch East India Company in 1657 as part of De Schuur, the company's granary. When Cecil Rhodes bought the manor in 1893 for 60,000 pounds it was in a state of neglect and in need of some R and R. English architect Herbert Baker was commissioned to enlarge the house and restore its original Cape Dutch appearance. The home's hybrid of ornate gables, colonnaded verandas, barley-sugar chimneys, whitewashed walls and warm teak woodwork ensure it's a residence fit for a King - or a President.
